Open stadium “Ugra-Athletics” of Khanty-Mansiysk hosted the opening ceremony of VIII Ugra Governor’s Cup which is a stage of the Russia Chess Cup among men.

The chairman of Khanty-Mansiysk Duma Boris Khokhryakov, deputy head of the region Aleksey Putin, the head of the city of Khanty-Mansiysk Vasily Filipenko, the Head of the Department of Physical Education and Sports  Evgeniy Redkin, and honorary president of the Ugra Chess Federation Dmitry Mizgulin came to congratulate the participants of the tournament.

 Boris Khokhryakov was the one to open a long-awaited event. He noted that Khanty-Mansiysk is gradually becoming the chess capital of the world, since every year Ugra helds a lot of high-level competitions. These days there are Women’s World Chess Championship and World Billiard Championship being played in the city.

“We are always ready to welcome guests and we enjoy doing that. Today playing chess is a fashionable and popular activity. For example, in Ugra there are over 17 thousand people addicted to the chess battles, and these competitions attract even more people”, said the chairman of Khanty-Mansiysk Duma.

 Aleksey Putin has also noticed that the high-class chess tournament will do well for the younger generation of the Ugra citizens: “We are doing our best for the development of chess in the autonomous okrug. And we are always happy to hear the wishes of the guests and the participants. “

 The Head of the Department of Physical Education and Sports Evgeniy Redkin underlined that this year Governor’s Cup is specific: “In the tournament there will be the representatives of five countries, which means that the 8th Governor’s Cup goes to the international format.” Vasily Filipenko and Dmitry Mizgulin wish all participants an uncompromising struggle and brilliant victories.

 The Head of the Khanty-Mansiysk noted that there were 30 players taking part in the first Cup, the number of players now has increased to 100 people. He also expressed the hope that this time the Cup will stay in the region.

The honour to raise the flag of the Russian Federation had the winner of the VII Governor’s Cup, international Grand Master Pavel Ponkratov.

 Competition will last until 23 November. More than a hundred players from Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Belarus will participate in it. Among them there are 19 Grand Masters and two participants eliminated from the World Cup – Madina Davletbayeva (Kazakhstan) and Evgenija Ovod (Russia). The Cup consists of two competitions: Tournament “A” – the Russia Cup, where chess players rated 2351 and above take part, and open tournament “B”, where everyone can play.
